LOS ANGELES — When Tori Amos thinks of Los Angeles, she first recalls the distinctly manmade scent of Aqua Net hairspray.

“I’m ashamed to say it, but in those days, I had a can of Aqua Net in my handbag at all times,” says the singer-songwriter, 58. “I’d make my hair as high as I could and be ready to go.”

A lead Democratic bargainer says senators have moved to the brink of an agreement on a bipartisan gun violence bill. That would potentially tee up votes this week on an incremental but notable package that would stand as Congress’s response to mass shootings in Texas and New York that shook the nation. Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut told reporters Tuesday that a final agreement on the package was at hand. The measure would make background checks tougher for the youngest gun buyers and bolster spending for school safety and mental health programs.

Evidence revealed at the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection shows that an aide for U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson told former Vice President Mike Pence’s staff that the Republican from Wisconsin wanted to hand-deliver fake elector votes from Wisconsin and Michigan. That revelation Tuesday led Johnson's Democratic opponents in Wisconsin to call for his resignation. Johnson’s spokeswoman Alexa Henning downplayed the texts, but did not deny that Johnson had wanted to hand-deliver the slate of fake electors to Pence. She calls it a “staff to staff exchange” and said no action was taken after the back and forth.

President Joe Biden has chosen Arati Prabhakar to be his science adviser. A former head of two federal science and engineering agencies, she will be the nation's first woman, person of color and immigrant to hold the job. But first she needs to be confirmed by the Senate. At DARPA she helped kick-start the process that eventually led to a type of RNA vaccines that became COVID-19 shots. She also was the youngest person to run the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Senator says bipartisan compromise on gun violence legislation at hand, congressional votes possible this week.

A Texas judge has denied a request by a district attorney to withdraw the execution date of a death row inmate whose case has raised legal questions about the role of spiritual advisers in the death chamber. John Henry Ramirez is set for execution Oct. 5. But Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez asked for the execution date to be withdrawn. Gonzalez says he's against the death penalty and that his office mistakenly requested the execution date. During a court hearing Tuesday, state District Judge Bobby Galvan in Corpus Christi denied the request, saying he doesn't have the power to withdraw the order. Ramirez’s attorney, Seth Kretzer, says he and Gonzalez plan to appeal.

Kentucky's governor has run into a roadblock in seeking relief for Louisville-area motorists forced to pay more at the pump for reformulated gas. Gov. Andy Beshear said Tuesday that federal regulators turned down his request. He's seeking a waiver to temporarily remove the requirement that costlier but cleaner-burning reformulated fuel be sold in Metro Louisville. He says reformulated fuel costs 20-30 cents more per gallon than other kinds of gas. During a time of skyrocketing gas pries, that’s adding to the financial strain for motorists in Jefferson County and parts of neighboring Oldham and Bullitt counties. Jefferson County includes Louisville.

It’s one of the United States’ few enduring alliances in an often-turbulent Latin America, one built around a decades-long partnership combating the nation’s drug cartels. But Gustavo Petro’s election as Colombia’s first leftist president is likely to test the U.S.’ special relationship with a major non-NATO ally like never before. During the hard fought contest, Petro, a former guerrilla, took aim at forced coca eradication and extradition — centerpieces of the U.S.-backed drug war — as well as a free trade agreement with the U.S. he blames for impoverishing Colombian farmers.

During a Tuesday news conference, Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe said that her primary concern is combating misinformation about the elections process.
