Renovating an old house to suit the modern times, and that too, without losing its soul, is not an easy task. Fathima and Sameer, both architects were truly impressed as soon as they saw the house in Edathala, Aluva. They didn’t hesitate to buy this house, which is almost a decade and a half old, as it stands in a prime location.

A new car porch has been newly added by paving cement board in metal structure. The old structure was 1800 sqft in area with three bedrooms. The upper floor was used as an open hall. After the renovation, the house, now is 2500 sqft in area with a living area, a bedroom and a balcony space newly added to the upper floor. The owners made sure to decorate their house with beautiful indoor plants to add glimpses of greenery. The courtyard in the ground floor and the balcony have been turned into pleasant spots of greenery. This has helped in granting a comfortable ambience to the interiors.

Besides adding new areas in the upper floor, the spaces in the ground floor have been rearranged to make them look modern and amazing. Redundant interior walls were removed to make the spaces vaster. A wall in most areas has been highlighted in cement finish to add dimension. The old flooring in the sit-out and the upper floor has been replaced. Meanwhile, the flooring works in the rest of the house is retained. Besides, the sanitary fittings in the bathrooms too are replaced with stylish and modern pieces.

A side courtyard has been arranged adjacent to the formal living area. Meanwhile, a sliding glass door is what connects the interiors to this area. The courtyard has been turned into a splendid garden area with lots of indoor plants. Interestingly, the glass roofing here is done by securing an old tree.

A classy ready-made dining table made in exquisite teak wood is the highlight of the dining area. A designer wall here has been turned into a comfortable sitting space. Besides, a bay window too has been arranged to make the interiors space-efficient. The ‘green’ partition where money plant vines are grown on ropes is an interesting feature.

The old kitchen has been given a modern makeover. Lots of storage spaces are added to make it utility friendly. The new cabinets in lacquered glass finish look chic. Meanwhile, the storeroom has been turned into a multi-utility area.

The old bedrooms have been transformed into cosy spaces where the beauty of minimalism could be seen. Cots with concealed storage are arranged here. Meanwhile, bunk beds have been added in the kids’ bedroom. The bedroom in the upper floor has an adjacent balcony too. You could enter this area through a sliding glass door. Besides, there is a jali opening here to ensure excellent cross ventilation. The pergola roofing on the balcony helps in pushing out the warm air from the house.

Those who visit the family are pleasantly surprised by the incredible makeover of this old house. They compliment the architect couple saying that their dream abode looks as fabulous and perfect as a brand new house.
